Leadership Arts Sessions Begin
Thirty-two individuals from 22 Oklahoma communities were on hand at Quartz Mountain Lodge near Lone Wolf for the first session of the 2013 Leadership Arts program. The first session included group activities and panel discussion centered on arts education. Panelists Amy Young, Lisa Allswede, Nicki Wood and Michael Eddens discussed the need for renewed focus on the arts in public education, citing the growing body of evidence that arts education fosters overall academic improvement and social development.
The session also included a tour of Quartz Mountain Resort, home to summer and fall art programs offered by the Oklahoma Arts Institute.
Session two takes place March 20-21 in Miami, OK.

Artists' Reception Scheduled for March 12
Postponed by February's inclement weather, an artists' reception for the three new Capitol gallery exhibitions has been rescheduled for Tuesday, March 12, 4 to 6 p.m. Free and open to the public, the reception will provide guests an opportunity to meet the featured artists and view their artwork in the East Gallery, Governor's Gallery and North Gallery. Featured artists include Regina Murphy from Oklahoma City, Almira Hill Grammer from Norman, and Grant McClintock from Osage County. Light refreshments will be served.

Congressional Art Competition Open to High School Students
Oklahoma high school students in Congressman Frank Lucas' district are encouraged to submit artwork for "An Artistic Discovery," an annual nationwide Congressional high school art competition sponsored by the Congressional Arts Caucus and initiated by members of Congress. The first place winning entry from each participating congressional district will be displayed in the corridor tunnel leading to the U.S. Capitol building for one year, where it will be seen by thousands of people visiting the nation's capital.

Share Medical Center Foundation Call for Proposals
The Share Medical Center Foundation in Alva, OK, is seeking proposals from professional artists and experts in the graphic design and signage communities to help bring its Art of Healing initiative to life. To learn about the vision for the project click here for project details. Concept and design should address overall themes of health and healing, cultural significance, community service, and navigational awareness.
Deadline to submit a proposal is April 1, 2013.

Artist Submissions Sought for State Capitol Exhibitions
The Oklahoma Arts Council is seeking submissions from artists interested in exhibiting their work at the Oklahoma state Capitol. Each year, Council staff curates a total of 18 exhibits in three rotating Capitol galleries - the East Gallery, Governor's Gallery, and North Gallery. Artists area selected annually from throughout the state for 60-day exhibitions. During the run of an exhibition, artwork is seen by thousands of individuals, including elected leaders, Capitol employees, tourists and students.

'Newspapers in Education' Features Capitol Art Curriculum
During February, students in hundreds of Oklahoma classrooms statewide learned about African-American history in Oklahoma through the artwork of the Oklahoma state Capitol. Through a sponsorship provided by Love's Travel Stops and Country Stores, the Council provided content for the February issue of The Oklahoman's "Newspapers in Education" program. The program brings daily digital newspapers and subject-based educational curriculum at no cost to more than 15,000 students each year.
