Janice Mathews-Gordon
Wanderings

April 29 - June 30
For the artwork in this exhibit, titled Wanderings, Mathews-Gordon experiments with acrylic paint and mixed media to explore the journeys we embark on during a lifetime. The compositions are set against a backdrop of abstract shapes, suggestive of the rocky land formations and wide-open spaces known to Oklahoma and the Southwest.

Mathews-Gordon explains, "Here, journeys are not depicted in linear form; rather, the jumbled shapes, symbols, and complementary colors convey shifts, obstacles, and pauses. They are a visual representation of the inherent dichotomies that compose our lives." View more...

Ginna Dowling
A Printmaker's Perspective: A Life Told in Layers

April 22 - June 23
Ginna Dowling makes biographical artwork. It tells the story of her heritage and life experiences, which she believes were necessary to make the commitment to be an artist. "I lived my entire life surrounded by the arts," says Dowling. Included in her lineage are poets, musicians, sculptors, and visual artists including her mother Polly Hammet and aunt Virginia Cobb, both nationally recognized and published artists. "My family influenced me more than anything or anyone else. Brushes soaking in containers of water, portfolios propped against the wall, mockups and layouts scattered on the surfaces of tables, and the smell of damp clay were such a normal part of my youth that it never dawned on me how unusual this was to most people."

The artwork in Dowling's exhibit tells the stories of her life experiences from a printmaker's perspective. It is her story told in layers through artwork made over the last decade. View more...

Sam Joyner
And I Too Love the Light

April 15 - June 16
The photographs included in this exhibit, titled And I Too Love the Light, by Tulsa photographer Sam Joyner were captured using film-based cameras. Joyner uses a large format 4" x 5" view camera or a Hassleblad medium format camera. Through the use of larger format photography, an image of higher resolution is produced. This allows for enlargements and smooth gradation without the grain or blur that would characterize similarly enlarged images produced from smaller film formats. The larger size of the film also allows for better control of the depth of field and therefore more photographic creativity.

Of Joyner's vision for his photography, the artist explains, "In spite of things dark and discouraging, the photographer's special challenge is to go beyond the cliches and stereotypes of our over-imaged, media-manipulated world and find the evidence of yes - to reveal scenes of awe, wonder, and curiosity with complete honesty - to find the quiet beauty of coherence, rhythm, and order."
