Conference Earlybird Registration Ends September 18

New sessions have been added to the 2015 Oklahoma Arts Conference schedule as Oklahoma Arts Council staff and partners continue working toward what will be a landmark year for the event. Don't wait to register - September 18 is last day to get the earlybird rate of $85. After September 18, the registration fee increases to $135.

In addition to sessions led by national and local expert presenters and panelists, the conference features networking events, interactive activities, community tours, and more. The annual conference draws more than 400 individuals who are involved in the arts across the state, including artists, arts administrators, board members, community developers, city leaders, educators, and art supporters.

$5,000 Grants Available for Oklahoma Alternative Education Schools

Alternative education schools in Oklahoma are eligible for up to $5,000 in grant funding to bring arts education programs to their students during the 2015-16 school year. Through the Arts in Alternative Education grant program, funds are available for programs involving dance, literary arts, media arts, music, storytelling, theater, traditional arts, and visual arts. Grants can be used to cover fees for arts instruction, teaching resource materials, and eligible project supplies.

The Arts in Alternative Education program was made possible by a grant from the Oklahoma State Department of Education.

Arts Council Surveys Due This Friday, September 4

Individuals who recently received email from the Oklahoma Arts Council requesting participation in one or more surveys are asked to complete those surveys by this Friday, September 4.

Feedback from several specific constituent groups is being sought as the Oklahoma Arts Council develops a new five year strategic plan.

Our appreciation to those individuals who have already completed surveys. We look forward to learning how we can continue serving Oklahoma through the arts.

Attend the Oklahoma Fall Arts Institute at Quartz Mountain

Four-day workshop retreats at the Quartz Mountain Arts and Conference Center in the fall offer Oklahoma educators and artists of all skill levels an inspiring opportunity to hone their creative skills. For 2015, workshops are available in painting, drawing, writing, photography, printmaking, collage, choreography, and more.

With three October weekend options available, tuition for the all-inclusive workshops varies. If eligible, be sure to take advantage of discounts that are offered to select groups:

  • Public school educators and administrators – No cost. Full scholarships.

  • K-12 private school educators – 50 percent discount ($287.50)

  • Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute alumni – 20 percent discount ($460)

  • College and university faculty and students – 20 percent discount ($460)

  • Members of 18 arts organizations � 20 percent discount ($460)

  • Oklahoma residents – $575

All registrants are required to pay a $30 registration fee. Visual art classes require an additional $30 studio fee. Meals and lodging are included in tuition.

Grants Bring Japanese Performing Arts to Audiences

The Japan Foundation is currently accepting proposals for Performing Arts Japan touring and collaboration grants. Designed to assist nonprofit organizations in introducing Japanese performing arts to local audiences, the program is available to nonprofit organizations for programming occurring during the 2016-17 fiscal year.

Two types of support are available:

  • Touring grants – assists with presentations to at least two locations outside major metropolitan areas.

  • Collaboration grants – assists collaborative efforts involving Japanese and American artists so that artists may create new work with the potential to develop it into a touring project.
    Deadline to apply is October 20.

Twelve Selected for Inaugural Tulsa Artist Fellowship

After more than 300 individuals applied to be part of the inaugural Tulsa Artist Fellowship class, 12 artists, including two with Oklahoma ties, have been selected for the program.

Underwritten by The George Kaiser Family Foundation, the program provides selected artists with stipends of $15,000 to $40,000 to live and work in Tulsa, exhibiting their work at local venues and events. Artists are scheduled to begin work on January 4, 2016 in Tulsa where they will be closely involved with the local arts community.

Artists with Oklahoma ties selected for the program include Nathan Young of Tulsa and Crystal Z. Campbell of Oklahoma City/Amsterdam.

Oklahoma Arts Council Announces Septemberfest Lineup

An annual tradition hosted by Oklahoma's Governor, Septemberfest has taken place at the Governor's Mansion since 1997. This year, the family-friendly event featuring live music, storytellers, hands with artist Erin Latham, and other activities moves across the street to the Oklahoma History Center located at 800 Nazih Zuhdi Drive in Oklahoma City.

Free and open to the public, this year's Septemberfest event will take place Saturday, September 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Oklahoma Arts Council is pleased to present the following performers in partnership with Friends of the Mansion:

  • 11:00 a.m. Rascall Bassoons

  • 12:00 p.m. Ballet Flamenco Español

Two Job Openings with the Oklahoma Arts Council

Two job openings are available with the Oklahoma Arts Council for qualified individuals interested in serving the citizens of Oklahoma through the arts.

The Oklahoma Arts Council is currently accepting applications for the following positions:

  • Director of Art in Public Places – This position is responsible for managing all aspects of the state's 1.5 percent for public art program.

  • Director of Visual Arts and Capitol Collections – This position requires the experience of an art museum professional to manage the Oklahoma State Capitol Art Collection and the Oklahoma State Art Collection.
