THE GOAL OF LEADERSHIP ARTS
The purpose of Leadership Arts is to develop a statewide network of community arts leaders and advocates.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
Leadership Arts class members will learn how the arts are harnessed to support economic opportunity, a high quality of community life, and ignite the creative potential of Oklahoma’s youth. The curriculum is designed for adult learners across cultural, social and educational backgrounds.
- Learn why and how the arts make a significant contribution to Oklahoma’s economy.
- Learn how Oklahoma communities have developed arts programs and vibrant arts spaces to enhance the quality of life of their citizens.
- Learn how the arts improve the image of our inner cities and neighborhoods by serving as a centerpiece for community engagement.
- Understand how arts active communities cultivate creative youth, and attract and retain a creative workforce.
SHARPEN YOUR LEADERSHIP SKILLS
Each session is interactive and will expand your understanding of group dynamics and the value of group work.
- Learn how to better articulate and advocate for the arts in Oklahoma.
- Learn how to build upon the power of group work, inclusiveness, creative partnerships and consensus building.
- Learn how to mobilize your own leadership capacity and the capacity of others.
WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM ATTENDING LEADERSHIP ARTS
Staff or board members of arts organizations, city economic and community development staff, school board members, community citizens and business leaders may apply for Leadership Arts.
HOW LEADERSHIP ARTS IS STRUCTURED
The first four 1½ day sessions are devoted to participatory learning. These lively sessions include learning to work in a group setting, meeting community arts organizers and a tour of community arts spaces. Required reading assignments address critical issues in community arts development and are sent via email to be read between sessions. Session Five is a 2½ day commitment to attend the Oklahoma Arts Conference.

- Session 1 – February 17-18, Quartz Mountain Resort, Lone Wolf
- Session 2 – March 24-25, Tahlequah
- Session 3 – April 28-29, Ada
- Session 4 – May 19-20, Oklahoma City
- Session 5 – Attend the Oklahoma Arts Conference, date to be determined
LEADERSHIP ARTS REQUIREMENTS AND INDIVIDUAL COMMITMENT
The foundation of Leadership Arts is built upon each individual’s commitment to learn and work within a group setting, then apply what is learned learn into community action. Absence from any session disqualifies attendee from graduation. The Leadership Arts application will require individual commitment to:
- Attend all five Leadership Arts sessions: Time commitment, approximately 11 days
- Complete all reading assignments and occasional homework assignments: Time commitment, 16-24 hours
- Engage in a community based arts program, project or arts advocacy effort
- Receive clearance from your employer to attend all Leadership Arts Sessions
- Respond to timely emails and telephone calls
COST TO ATTENDEES AND HOW LEADERSHIP ARTS IS FUNDED
Leadership Arts is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. Therefore, there is no cost for tuition. Attendees however must be prepared to pay for travel, overnight lodging, evening meals and $50 registration to attend the Oklahoma Arts Conference. (Monetary value of Leadership Arts training is $1000 per person.)
