Kelsey Karper
Writing with Light
December 4, 2006 thru February 4, 2007
Kelsey
Karper’s exhibit Writing with Light showcases her desire to explore
the past by utilizing historic photographic processes to produce stark
images reminiscent of a time long ago.
Karper says the processes she employs help her obtain a better understanding
and appreciation of how photography has evolved. “Learning about
the past helps me to comprehend the direction of my own work and of
photography in general. My work takes this understanding and translates
it into a visual form with the purpose of sharing this understanding
with those that view it.”
Her images are a paradox in that the depictions of the modern age
are created by processes invented over 150 years ago. The process Karper
has chosen yields a remarkable play between shadow and light. The transparency
of the shadowy forms casts an almost supernatural presence. The most
simplistic object becomes hauntingly beautiful. Karper chooses the
process first so that she may then choose a subject that will emphasize
the qualities and characteristics inherent to the process.
“Some processes are known for their ability to render detail … others
for their ability to create mood and atmosphere. The subject and the
process should complement each other.”
Karper received her B.F.A. in Photographic Arts from the University
of Central Oklahoma where she conceptualized and organized the first
off-campus senior exhibition. She has participated in group shows across
Oklahoma including the City Arts Center, Untitled Art Space, and the
International Photography Hall of Fame. Karper is currently the Marketing
and Publications Manager for the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition
Sponsored by the Oklahoma Arts Council. For more information contact Scott Cowan or Karen Sharp at 405.521.2931 or scott@arts.ok.gov.
