Alyson Atchison
Thinking of You
July 10 thru September 10, 2006
Contemporary
Oklahoman artist Alyson Atchison uses a process called serigraphy to
create multihued whimsical images. American graphic artists adopted
serigraphy, also known as screen-printing or silk-screening, in the
1930’s as a means of mass-producing images.
To produce a print, Atchison uses layers of color pushed through a
fine mesh screen. To prevent certain areas from being printed over,
liquid screen filler is applied to the screen. The process allows an
artist to make several prints of an original artwork. The technique
was essential to the 1960’s Pop Art movement. Andy Warhol, the
most prolific artist of the movement, utilized the process in order
to produce his illustrious prints of American icons, including Marilyn
Monroe and the Campbell’s soup can.
Atchison’s exhibit, “Thinking of You,” explores
inspired images strewn with a dramatic array of colors. Atchison also
employs a photosensitive emulsion technique to apply computer-generated
images or photographs within the print. The result, a fascinating visual
contradiction in which the artist’s own fluid images converge
with the accuracy of form found within digital images. Regarding her
work, Atchison said, “The subject matter for my artwork originates
from my imagination and is communicated through the use of distinct
color and line.” The simplistic features of her abstracted forms
are engaging and heartfelt while endless sentiment can be seen within
the body language of her faceless figures.
Atchison earned a Bachelor’s degree in two-dimensional art and
a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Central
Oklahoma (UCO). She currently teaches art at the Harding Fine Arts
Center Charter High School, the City Arts Center, and at UCO. Atchison
has participated in numerous exhibits throughout Oklahoma, including
Oklahoma
City’s Festival of the Arts and the Oklahoma
Visual Artists Coalition’s annual 12x12 silent auction. Atchison is
a member of the Oklahoma City Empowerment Zone, Health and Recreation
Committee, and the Southern Graphic Council, as well as a mentor for
the Youth Leadership Exchange.
